Visit counts for ‘bars’ seems very low compared to restaurants. Is it possible that many locations we think of as bars that serve limited amounts of food are being classified as restaurants?

Any info you can give us on how the Bar/Restaurant line is drawn would be helpful.

@Christos_Nicolaides_University_of_Cyprus_MIT It probably is happening. Categories are hard. You could spot check a handful of locations you know personally in the data to see how they are being classified.

For any bar-like businesses that ARE getting classified as restaurants, you can use the category_tags column in core places to pull out the more bar-like places.

in particular you could pull out tags like:
bar or pub
beer garden
brewery or brewpub
cocktail lounge
dive bar
irish pub
late night
sports bar
wine bar

here is a little more info on how naics codes are assigned:

Thanks for this info!
