Does anyone have any insights into which is the best source for COVID case counts - Johns Hopkins or The New York Times?
I’ve looked at this for Colorado. This document is comparing the JH and NYT case and deaths to CO Dept of Health counts. I don’t know if this extends to other states.

you can compare various sources of case data through our group’s tracker: 2019-coronavirus-tracker.com I think each dataset will have differences, but they should be major.
